“Alternative” rock, new wave and industrial mixes, all female fronted.

theSTART is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1998. Their current lineup includes Aimee Echo, Jamie Miller, Lance Webber and Chelsea Davis.

Despite the buzz in the metal community on this Los Angeles band, theStart’s debut effort, Shakedown!, is surprisingly new wavey and hardly what I’d call heavy. Label aside though, this is a pretty cool album, though I doubt most headbangers would make it past track two. Featuring Aimee Echo and Scott Ellis from disbanded Hollywood industrial-goth-metalheads Human Waste Project and a guy from Snot, the Start specialize in hard edged dance music

with hard rock overtones. Songs like the title track, “Gorgeous,” and “Communion” would fit nicely of a Missing Persons album or a Human League reunion effort but would surly be scoffed at by serious heshers. Frank Meyer

They are also one of my all time favourite bands.

Jakalope is a Canadian industrial rock group. They are named for a fictional animal, although the animal’s name is more commonly spelled jackalope. Jakalope was first spawned in the creative mind of world-renowned producer and mixer, Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie). The Vancouver native brought the Jakalope to life in the spring of 2003. In October of 2007 it was revealed that Jakalope left the Orange Record Label. As well, in late 2007 it was revealed that Katie B. had left the group to pursue a solo career.By December of 2007 Chrystal Leigh was revealed to be the new singer of the Canadian music group.
I don’t know if anyone that’s Canadian remembers them but they were pretty popular for a while.

Snake River Conspiracy is a rock band currently comprised of Jason Slater, an ex-member of Third Eye Blind (bass guitar, producer) and Matt Lucich (Drums). [..] More than just a straight nu-metal collection, Sonic Jihad is a journey, lyrically and musically, through human emotions. The luscious, slo-mo cinematic strains of “Casualty,” with its dragging beats and Bond-esque strings, is an homage to longing. The Phil Spector-inspired production of “You and Your Friend” and the ultra hi-tech aching of the Cure’s “Love Song” encapsulate love and obsession. And the concoction of drum & bass, cheesy lounge elements, and demonic guitars on “Somebody Hates You” makes a convincing stab at–not surprisingly–hate. And their distressed and blissfully aching cover of the Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now” is nothing short of staggering. With femme fatale Tobey Torres vocals in the fore and the entire group creating drama and attitude, Sonic Jihad is the triumph of passion over technology.
Another one of my favourite bands, from just this one cd of course. Since they broke up, sadly. But still. Good stuff.
